Chapter 7

Noella woke up feeling like a slug for how she’d behaved last night. Poor Seth. He finally gets a date that he seemed to be enjoying and she went all mental on him.

She could only think of how much she wished it had been her who sat at his table talking about the work that made them happy. She’d not really had a chance to talk heart-to-heart with Seth like they used to before he was swept away to the finest college and she’d been left in the dust.

Deep down, she knew that he still had no real interest in her. Not once had he asked her if she wanted to go on a date, except for that silly bet which she probably lost after last night’s fiasco.

Dragging herself out of bed, she decided that what she needed was a good, long run with the dogs. They were already put out over not being allowed in the cabin with her. Seth had wanted them to remain in the kennel until they learned to obey her commands the first time.

Even that was a lost cause. Dottie had no desire to relinquish her queen-bee status in their little pack. And although Dash was starting to respond to Noella’s commands, he would probably be the first to admit that Dot was alpha-boss, paws down.

She still had at least one more week, if not two, to endure this torture. If she didn’t complete the training, she’d most definitely lose her chance at that contract soon as she showed up with her rambunctious pair of giants.

Noella dressed in her jogging attire, twisting her hair up in a bun on top of her head, then headed to the kennel with the Dane’s running leashes. There was a trail that ran beside the lake and along the edge of the ridge of cliffs surrounding Seth’s land that she would take. Yes, a bit of fresh, pine air pumping through her lungs was exactly what she needed to put things into perspective.

“Come on babies,” she called out as she unlatched the gate. Both stopped their wrestling with each other once they noticed the leashes and were at her side. Dottie pushed past Dash, wanting hers first. “Such a bossy doggy. Dottie. When are you going to learn how to act like a lady, you big Brutus?”

The spotted Dane looked up at her with those sagging chocolate brown eyes and Noella was sure she was grinning. Such a brat.

Once she had Dash’s leash on, they headed toward the lake at their usual jogging pace.

As they passed the barns, Noella noticed that Seth’s horse was missing. Was he off riding this early? More important, was he furious at her over last night? He’d not shown up at her door for their morning lessons, now that she thought about it. But he didn’t normally want to start until after breakfast.

No matter. He could only teach her so much before she needed to put it into practice and take control of her dogs.
